Title: The 8-month Garage Sale "adventure" begins this Saturday!!
Post by: Bucky on March 25, 2010, 11:08:54 AM
Greetings from Central Illinois.   :D

For those of you who have been on the forum for a while - you know that one of my loves is garage sale season . . . . . . welllllllllllllllllllllll, Saturday it begins!!   ;D  Woohoo!!  It's an indoor, heated sale which is nice this time of year because it is still nippy in the morning hours.  This is an annual sale held at the high school to benefit the band program.  We've found some great buys here in the past.  Of course, the key to any bargain hunting adventure - the early bird gets the best deals!!  This sale starts at 7 a.m. - I will be there at 6:40 a.m. waiting in line for the doors to open - and bet your bottom dollar - I will be one of the first 10 in the door!!!   ;D

I always give fair warning to my family . . . . "IF anybody is planning on going with me in the morning, I'm leaving at 6:30 a.m. - if you're not ready, I'm leaving without you!!"  They have learned through the years, Mama ain't kidding . . . be ready, or be left behind!!  LOL   ::)  You definitely don't mess with Mama and her garage sales.   :D  My husband has threatened to put a magnetic sign "caution, this vehicle makes sudden stops for garage sales" on my car!!   ::)

I've also seen my second favorite sale is coming up the beginning of April.  A HUGE Subdivision sale.  Unfortunately, this sale is spread out through this subdivision (which circles a lake) so you have to keep moving your vehicle.  The in and out, in and out of the vehicle gets old after a while - but, I'll give it a shot.   :D  There has only been one time in recent years that I haven't gone to this sale.  Actually, I WAS on my way to the sale - I had an infected tooth and my face was puffed up, it was aching and I didn't feel real good.  I got halfway to this subdivision, then turned around and went home.   :'(  Now you know I wasn't feeling good to pass this semi-annual sale up!!

Another of my favorite sales is coming up in April too.  The HUGE flea market in Kodak, TN. - (actually, this is open year-round, we just don't get there often).   This year we're not going to get there quite so early - a lot of the booths weren't open yet.  IF the weather is nice, they have booths both inside and outside.   :o  That's a lot of walking!!  Now granted, some of this stuff is just "junk" . . . . but, you never know what you'll come across.  As you know, "one man's junk is another man's treasure!".   ;D

Once the weather warms up a tad bit more, I hope to have my own garage sale at my house.  Depends on how wet of an April we have and how muddy our driveway is.  We really need a load of gravel before all the cars (many times over 100 cars in a 3-day sale) are up and down our driveway.   :o

Anybody else a bargain hunter at a garage sale, tag sale, jumble sale, flea market, "junk" sale or whatever name it goes by in your area??   I just love, love, love 'em!!   ;D   ;D

Bucky

I am with you on this one.  I love a good sale.  I also love to go to the flea markets.  I didn't get to as many garage sales last year since I am having trouble walking but I now have a wheelchair so we get to go to the flea markets as much as we want.  I find lots of neat things at some of the garage sales.  We also have subdivisions that have really nice sales.  Some of them are places with really big and fancy houses and they get rid of all kinds of things.  I would rather do this than go to the mall.  lol.  My family loves it also.

Do you like to go to auctions.  I find them fun also.

Oh Gosh! I love garage sales too.    I like socializing with the folks too as well as the bargains. LOL  We have several subdivisions/neighborhoods around here that have sales. Funny as I run into the same people every year.  If their sign(s) are very readable, I compliment them on them. I hate the teeny little signs you can't see from the road driving! Maybe we need a universal NEON color sign that is always used for garage sales?

There is a group of ladies I always run into in the Fall. When their husbands are watching football they all pile into the van and go garagesale-ing. Nice fun group.

I definitely brake for garage sales.

Good morning!   ;D

Well, I got up early - was FIRST in line at the school  ;D, and was in and out within 20 minutes!!  As with any sale, some times are better than others.  This year wasn't one of the better years for the high school sale.   :'(  In the past there have been TONS of tables and stuff all over the gymnasium - today, was at least half the amount, or even less than half the amount!  I don't know if it's because of the economy - maybe people are keeping their stuff to sell at their own garage sales to make a little bit of money.   ???

Here is my big buys of the day:  My whole $1 I spent on the following items:  a new package of 50 tea lights, 2 boxes with an assortment of tea lights and votives (total of 64 tea lights, 29 votives), a new "over the hill medical alert bracelet" - this will come in handy for a gag gift at someones birthday.  (The bracelet says:  "OVER THE HILL MEDICAL DISASTER Everything that doesn't hurt, doesn't work!") . . . hmmmm, maybe I should wear this now for myself!!!   ::)

The votives and tea lights will come in handy for the frequent power outages we have.  I went through quite a few tea lights this past winter.

I wish there were some more sales on today - but, it's still pretty early in the season for garage sales.  Too cold to be sitting out in a garage for hours on end.   It will be here soon . . . . .  :D

Enjoy your Saturday!!

Bucky

Bucky I am with you, I love garage sales.  I have been going for over 30 years now and always seem to find some bargain.  My favorites are brand new items that you get for little or nothing. Most of my family laugh at how frugal I am but then again I do not owe on charge cards and stay within our means.  So YEAH !  I have also checked out the local American Thrift Store and often found many great buys as our local Sears and Target donate many new items to it.  I have noticed in the past year an increase in people, many who look very well groomed and dressed, shopping there.  I am hoping they are just looking for a bargain like me and not because of job loss.  In this economy, I think our hobby has become fashionable.  Happy hunting!!

Last Friday, I got to go to a town wide garage sale.  Woohoo . . . . It was raining a little, but nothing stops us true garage salers.    ;)  By the time I got done, my hair looked like a drown rat - but, I had some bargains in the trunk of the car.   ;D

Found several brand new items - a fleece blanket for $1, one of those WillowTree figurines $3 (which I might mark up and resell at my garage sale), an 18 oz. Ruby Red Holly Berries soy candle $1 (smells really good), a pretty green w/purple flower tote bag 25c and a new small pill organizer for 25c that will fit nicely in my purse.

I also found some hardback books for my son - 50c each, which would have had a retail value of $151.70 and I paid $2.50!!  Bought some little toys for resale paying 10c or 25c each.  As I have mentioned on other occasions - I have a hard time finding a purse I like.  It HAS to have a zipper to close it, prefer a double handle versus a shoulder bag, pockets on the inside and preferably a pocket on the outside for my keys.  Within the last year, I have hit the "Bucky purse lottery" at sales and found some really good buys.   :D  This time included!  I got a retired Vera Bradley red bandana purse for $3, a green Worthington purse for 50c, and another no-name green leather purse for 50c.  I tend to always end up with a black or brown purse so I went "outside the box" and got some different colors.  Are these a "need"?  NO, but I will use them and then rotate out some of my other purses.  I make it sound like I have a ton of purses, I really don't - maybe six, including these ones.  The price and style were right.   ;D

I passed up the chance at a subdivision sale on Saturday.  Can't do the back-to-back big sales like that any more.  Besides, the money tree in the back yard hasn't bloomed yet!  LOL

Anybody find any good buys lately?

Happy bargain hunting!

Bucky

Guess what today was???  One of my favorite subdivision sales.   ;D  My son and I walked, and walked, and walked, and walked.  I spent a whole 85 cents!   :o  I got two brand new, still in the package, baby hooded towels - 25c each!  (Store sticker on the back of one said $10 and the other sticker said $13).  An Elmo fleece hoodie for my great niece, 25c.  A heavy plastic airplane - 10c (bought this for resale in my sale).    Son found a book for $1 and a Kodak EasyShare camera w/3 batteries for $12 (I've taught him well - he's looking to resell this and make some money  :D).

Anybody else go "saling" this past week or weekend??

TGIF everyone!!   ;D

Went to a sale today and got some music CD's for $1 each.  I hardly, if ever, buy music new - I always find good deals at sales.  I just check and make sure the CD isn't all scratched up and what the case says, is what is inside (I have found some to have been mixed up before).  Right now, I'm listening to The Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits 1974-78 . . . ah, some of the songs I remember from my youth as a teenager.   :D I can understand how my parents / grandparents liked to hold on to certain parts of their past . . things we remember about growing up.  The music we listened to, what was happening then, etc.

The other CD's I got were:  The Eagles - Their Greatest Hits  (another 1970's goodie), The Best of Reba McEntire, Shania Twain - Come on Over, and Carrie Underwood - Some Hearts.

I'm old fashioned, I don't have an Ipod, or any of those new fangle-dangle gadgets that people have for music.  I still use a radio, cassette player, CD player and . . . . . RECORDS!!  I love my record player (actually, it's a combo unit - radio, cassette, CD player and record player in one).

Ahhhh, going to enjoy my trip down memory lane as I do some housework this afternoon.   ;D

Count me in too, nothing like a good deal on good stuff! I hate those that try to unload a lot of mess, though. I like picture and and to know what is there BEFORE I go through the trouble of going and wasting gas and time

We have an online site in our area where you can post pictures and sell most EVERYTHING!!!!! It's great, in fact I just bought a new chair for little of nothing just last night. I am so glad to have found this one, it is very different and will fit perfectly in a space I wanted it for.

It was about 7:30 p.m. when I saw it and by 9:15 p.m. I had it in my house!

What took so long? I had to pick of a brother to help me load it, stop get gas and money!

I paid $100.00, but that was truly a steal!

We live around mostly military so we can find very unique things from all over the world, plus they sell very cheaply, especially when they are moving. The only thing with military sales you have to watch for dents and such in funiture because of so many moves. I was a watch dog over my things when we were in military, but still had a lot of things stolen.

Today was a town-wide garage sale . . . .  ;D  I walked and moved the car for over three hours.  My son was going to go with me, but backed out, so I got to go "saling" by myself.  Actually, it's easier that way . . . I can go as fast or slow as I want too.

I come from a game playing family.  Our hall closet is full of board games.  Today, I came across a game called "Fact or Crap" . . it's a trivia game - sounded like it would be fun, so I got it.  I also got a DVD, Meet the Fockers for $1 - I figured, we could watch it, then put it in my next sale.  Picked up a few books for 25c each, a bracelet for 50c, a pretty striped tote for 75c (looks new).  Got two brand new graduation plastic table cloths for 50c each (has our school colors and graduation caps on them), and a new - 5 ft. x 10 ft.  heavy duty plastic banner that says "Congratulations Graduate" for $1.

I'm looking forward to having a sale of my own soon, I hope.  It will probably end up being the first week in June when my son is out of school and can help.  I usually have two sales a year . . one in the spring and one in the fall.

Anybody else go garage saling this week/weekend??

That's what been keeping me so busy, that and remodeling my den! I can't count the ones I have been to, especially the ones online, I love them!!

I have found some really nice things. Like I said what with the military being here and bringing things back from every part of the world I have hit the jack pot. Most of them sell things so cheaply.

Now don't get me wrong I have been to some really duds. Some of them need to just throw most of what they are trying to sale away! Nothing upsets me about yardsaling than going to those with JUNK! I know what's junk to one person is treasure to others, BUT some will put dirty things out. I don't buy clothing from yardsales, I mostly go to look for items for the house, BUT I INSIST ON BUYING NOTHING BUT CLEAN ITEMS!!!!!

I got taken when buying a baby cradle for my soon to be grandson. I'm thinking anything for a baby WOULD be CLEAN, I mean how can a newborn dirty anything and who comes in contact with a newborn if their hands are unclean??? Well I bought this thing, it was posted online that the child was now 3 mos. old and had only used it 5 times. I could see that, that's why I really didn't want to spend alot of money for one, they don't get much use.

I pay for it without really inspecting it, it was hard to see in the light  I was in. I got that thing in my car and almost suffocated on the ride home! It stinked!!
Well that was a wasted 25.00!! When I got home I saw stains that I know a newborn did not make, looked like someone with diry hands had wiped them on the fabric!~

Hi there . . . .

This week I am holding my own garage sale.  Today is day two of a three day sale.

You know the saying, "location, location, location"?   Well, it's true!  I live out in a rural area - although, my road is a shortcut to another town, so we do get a fair amount of traffic.  I have signs up all over the main "crossroads" to get to my house . . . so, you can't miss my signs.  (I don't bother to put an ad in the newspaper any more . . nobody has ever come because they saw my newspaper ad, plus - the ads are too expensive.)  We've only had half the customers we've had in the past.   :(

Last night as I had just crawled into bed, I was laying there and then it dawned on me . . . . I was missing a lot of items from my last sale (the items I don't donate, I box them up and put them in the next sale).  There was one whole big tote full of items still in the basement!   :o  So, I get up - go downstairs and haul it upstairs so it will be ready to be put out for todays sale.  Thankfully, they still had price stickers on them so all I had to do was make room for them on the tables.

Both yesterday and today I set some items just outside the garage - wouldn't you know it, it starts to rain . . . grrrrrrrrr.  Haul them back inside.  About 45 minutes later, I haul them back outside again.   ::)

I have put so much work into this sale - everything is priced and displayed so it is easy to see.  Guess how much money I've made so far??  So far, for the last two days I have made . . . . drum roll . . . . a whopping $23!!!   :o   ::)   :'(  So disappointing!!   I have one more day left . . . sure hope a lot more people show up and buy lots of stuff.  Anybody need directions?  LOL   ;)

Such is life in the garage sale business . . . . . .

Bucky

See Bucky I can tell you just like to do this for the fun of it, me I would have lost patience with that the first day!
I have this thing about stuff coming back in the house, IT DON'T! I will tell some, especially those I know may not have alot of money that if they come back at the end of the day whatever is not sold they can have, just be sure to take it with them. That's the few times I've had a sale mostly I take things to the Goodwill if family and friends can't use them.

I just redid my living room told my nephew to come and get what he wants, he took sofa and two chairs did not need dining room funiture so that went to Goodwill. My family have this thing of saying they want it, can you hold on to it for me for a few, NO, COME GET IT, NOW! I'm sure I could have sold the furniture it was in perfect condition can almost count the times we've sat on it, but I do not have the patience for selling, just BUYING!! ::) ;D ;D ;D

It's Saturday . . . v-e-r-y hot and humid out . . . so, what do I do?  Yep, hit the garage sale trail for a subdivision sale.   ;D  You could cut the humidity with a knife . . everyone was complaining about the weather.  Ugh!  However . . . we kept on plugging along going from house to house looking for bargains.

I had two great finds today:

1)  I like to purchase CD's at sales - a whole lot cheaper at $1-$2 a piece than buying them new.  For $1 total I got - a boxed 5-disk set of Billboard Top Rock 'n' Roll Hits 1968 - 1972, plus a single CD Entertainment Weekly The Greatest Hits 1976.  LOTS of great music in these six CD's . . . talk about a trip down memory lane!!   ;D

2)  For a joke, I got this 4" wide tiara for 25c to wear when my SIL comes for a visit week after next.  My SIL and I have always been competitive playing games like Backgammon, 31, Scrabble, Farkle, Bejeweled Blitz, etc.- she is always telling me that I'm The Queen.  So . . . now Queen Bucky has her crown to wear when playing games.   ;D  I'm sure we'll get several games of Backgammon in while she's here - can't wait . . . I miss seeing her (she lives 480 miles away).

Anybody else been to any good sales lately?

Queen Bucky  ;D  (but here, I just go by Bucky . . lol)

Queen Bucky

You certainly have an eye for a bargain. Please can I borrow your cd's when you are finished with them. I love that kind of music.

My best bargain was a pair of red Crocs , infant size 4, for my little grandaughter. I have a pair and she absolutely loves them, so I knew she would be delighted with these. They only cost ?1.99 and since giving them to her 2 days ago, her expensive, measured to fit shoes, have been cast aside, much to her mum's disgust!

Oh gosh I never find 70s music at garage sales and I look.

I don't like the junk sales too much either but I even like less the ones where they paid say $10 for something 5 years ago and think they should get $7 now. Geesh!    Also any clothes over $5 just don't go at garage sales unless it is a speciality type. AND ifyou can't get a stain out of a pc of clothing, put it in the free box! ::)

I like the old repro type tins and switch them around to decorate my bathroom.  Usually get them for 25cents ea.  My latest buys were a new pair of beautiful beaded sandals and a new pair of those short red boot type shoes for $2.

The rest of you feel YOU should have a garage sale yourself with all the stuff you have?   ;D
I call it rotating the house inventory.  We are the untilmate recyclers! LOL

Hey Everyone, I know this is kinda of an old thread, but I've been cruising the SJS section since I got here and I missed this part all along. I've been missing all the fun.  Anyway I had to bump this up.  I'm a thrift store girl myself.  I'm broke as can be, but my wardrobe is filled with with Anne Taylor, Calvin Kline. Old Navy etc.  Those that can afford nice clothes usually tire of them long before they look old.  I've found the greatest stuff.  I have 3 great t.v.'s from thrift stores.  Everyones upgrading to LCD Flatscreens so the big bulky ones are really cheap.  I got a really big 26 inch flat front wide screen in my room, a 27  inch in my son's room and a huge 29 inch our "hang out room" .  All were $25 or less.  We just got a nice old mahogany table wit Empire legs with matching solid oak chairs for $30.  It's like going to a big giant garage sale that's inside and air conditioned.  The kids find all kinds of neat toys, I clean them up and put new batteries in and they are thrilled at their new discovery.  We do the garage sales, too, but right now, it just too hot and sunny for me.  Love the thread.

Anybody been to these church thrift/garage sales?  Here on some the last day they give you a plastic bag and you fill it up for $1.     Saturday I got a nice wicker type wall mirror, pretty welcome plaque, silver wire type valentines basket "thinking ahead" and 2 shirts for $1.   ;D

When we had the floods here in 2008, a gal I was fostering her 3 cats for until she found a home lost about everything.  A church sale had whatever fits in a big garbage bag for $5.  I got her a beautiful pair of bedroom lamps, wall key holder, linens, small tool, kit and some other household stuff and a good size basket. I filled the basket with cleaning supplies from the $1 store.  The church was so happy it was going to someone that needed it and the gal about bawled when she came to pick up her cats and I presented her all that.

Also I have an excuse to go garage-saleing (like I need more stuff LOL ;)). I pick up cheap pet supplies - collars, food bowls, old towels, carriers, etc and donate them to the shelter or take them to my volunteer group that helps elderly/disabled people keep their companion pet.

I will really miss the garage sales when winter comes. The resale and thrift shops are not that great on bargains here.

Jennifer . . . glad we've found another member who also enjoys finding bargains.   ;D

I haven't been to too many sales this summer - it's been waaaay too hot . . . plus, I'm trying to downsize - and hitting the sales gets me in trouble.  LOL  There was a big subdivision sale this past Saturday I would have loved to have gone to . . . but, had other errands that HAD to be done, so I couldn't make it.    :'(

It's cooler out today . . . maybe, some of the scorching summer weather is wearing off and I can just "browse" at some sales here and there in the next few weeks.   :D

Happy hunting . . . .

I'm on a search for linens.  I got a new sewing machine for my 10th Anniversary from DH and I love it!!! I can't wait to recover old pillows and make new curtains, you know. asy stuff that changes that changes the way a whole room looks.  A nice looking King size sham can make two throw pillows. Got a new shower curtain for my bathroom, it's gorgeous!!!.  I the little things.  Happy Hunting!!!

I found the most gorgeous Amber Glass wine decanter today!  I paid $15 for it, but it is sooo pretty.  I also got a really pretty 1940's silver plated, I think, can't find any Hallmarks, Jewelry box, fabulous design, paid $10 for it.  Cool bags of little toys for the kids a dollar a piece= priceless!

Today there are two big sales . . . one a town-wide sale, and another a subdivision sale.  I didn't go to either!   :'(

Both events required moving the car for each house as it was spread out.  You couldn't just park and walk to them and move the car every now and then.  That constant in and out, in and out, in and out tires me out.  So, I opted not to go at all.  Sniff, sniff, sniff

Garage sale season will be coming to an end in October - so there aren't too many more weeks left.

I need to have a sale of my own.  I dread having to haul all the stuff up from the basement.  It's all marked, so all I have to do is set it out - but, cleaning out the garage, hanging plastic, setting up tables.  Ugh . . .

Anybody been to any good sales lately?

Today, while I was on my way to the grocery store, I saw those two words that will stop me cold in my tracks . . . . Garage Sale!!   ;D  (Hubby has always said he's going to get me a sign for the car - "Caution - makes sudden stops for Garage Sales".)  hehe

For $1 total I got (these are all brand new):  an ornament holder - it's this long wavy silver  T-bar that will hold 8 ornaments on it, and three packages of things you can use for scrapbooking - some round adhesive tags, some round colored letters and a baby gift tag.

There was a ton of stuff on this one table - but, I didn't see a price for anything.  Instead of following my "rule" - (IF you are even remotely thinking of buying something, pick it up and carry it with you) - I just went to the gal to check out and asked how much they were.  It ends up they were 25c each!   :o  I took the stuff to the car and then I got to thinking . . . hmmm, that's a really good price, I should go back and get more.

So, I turn around and walk back in and there's this lady at "the table" just grabbing everything she can - scissors, hole punches, stickers, card stock - all brand new for 25c each.  >:(  (In the meantime, I hear the gal who's having the sale say, "I have a shop on the square".)

I didn't buy anything more - that gal took all the good stuff.  Rats!!  I'm not "into" scrapbooking, but I plan on using the things I got to decorate gift packages.

Oh well . . . I'm happy with the $1 purchase I spent today.   ;D

Morning Bucky, You have such an influence on me.

New Horizons for Me: Stopped at a consignment store yesterday as hubby is having his 50th HS class reunion and we plan to go.

Lady was about 45 minutes late getting to store. Went ahead and got my hair cut and returned just before she got there.  Three others were waiting for her to open the door. Said I had spent 45 minutes waiting for her to come and that I should get 45 % off the price of my items. Others told how long they had waited.

When found a beautiful suede jacket embellished with monogramming, I went to check out and she said she was going to give me 45% off the tag price.... $16 for a nice suede jacket and when got home found tag tucked in pocket and one of the 'thingies' that keeps it from collecting mold.  Looks like its not been worn before as no indication on elbows.

Well, good thing we don't live in the same neighborhood OR I probably end up catching GARAGE SALE FEVER FROM YOU...

You are truly a sweetheart, Bucky.... Have a good weekend. :-*   Joy looking for new horizons to explore!!!!! :)

NewJoy -  (how do you like my new name for you?)   ;)

Great deal on the suede jacket!

I've always told my son, "always ask - the worst they can say is "no" ", so good for you speaking up about a 45% discount!!  Congrats on that!!

(Have fun at hubby's class reunion . . tonight is my 35th - I'm not going as it is 480 miles away.)

Yesterday, I stopped at a few garage sales.  One sale the people were moving.  She had three Thomas Kinkade pictures - $5.50 each.  I've always loved his pictures and would have bought them if they had been one big picture and not three vertical small prints in each frame.  I picked them up - looked at them, and put them down and moved on.  The lady said, "if you're interested in the pictures, I can work out a deal with you" . . . . I told her I would like a big picture, not small ones.  I told hubby about it this morning - he said, "awww, you should have bought them - you could have resold them for more!".  They did have the letter of authenticity attached too.  Oh well.

I did buy a few toys at a sale 25c each for resale.  I love when I buy something inexpensive at one sale . . . come home, do nothing but put a higher price sticker on it and put it in my sale.  Pure profit!   ;D

I'd really like to have a garage sale here soon.  I just need someone to sit out there with me (our house sits back from the road - feel safer having someone else here with me).  Anybody available to come sit with me?   :D  I'll feed ya!

I need to have the sale before October rolls around (which isn't far away) as my son and another gentleman hunt on our property.  I don't think they would appreciate cars coming in and out of the driveway all day when they are trying to hunt.

There were a few sales in the paper today - but, I didn't venture out.  Slept in and then it rained.  There is one interesting sale in the paper on Monday afternoon - might have to go check it out!   :D

Here, they have garage sales almost any day of the week.  Certain towns have sales earlier in the week than others.  So, if a person really wanted to, they could go to garage sales all week long!

Happy hunting . . . .  ;D

Bucky

HI Bucky....

I wish you would have bought the Thomas Kinkade pictures too! I love his pics and would have come down and bought them from your next garage sale...lol! I especially like the cottage series and some of the lighthouse ones as well!

Sigh.....

Woohoo . . . I see in the local paper that this Saturday is my favorite subdivision sale!!  Yay!   ;D  This subdivision you can park your car and walk quite a bit before you move the car.  At times like this is when I wish my car was like Kit . . . just call it, and it comes!  LOL   :D

I would love to own a golf cart - just zip around the subdivision in that!  That would be fun!

I still would like to have my own sale before snow flies - but, don't know how I would pull that off.  I need to have someone here to sit out there with me - no one is available during the week and I don't really want to tie up my Saturday having a sale (there is only one Saturday available before hunting season - and that is THIS Saturday - nope, no sale for me this week).  What I might do is make a list of the big buck items I have to sell and post it at the grocery store bulletin board and get sales that way.  It costs too much to put an ad in the paper - cuts into my profit . . .  ;)

Happy bargain hunting everyone!   ;D

Hi

Today, before heading to the grocery store - I took in a few garage sales.   ;D

In fact, that subdivision sale that is on tomorrow had several garages open and selling today.  Yay!!  So, since I had my "fix" of sales today, I just might sleep in tomorrow . . . . depends.

Anyhow, here's what I found:  a 2-disk CD music for 50c (turns out I already have this CD  ::) - at least I'm consistent - like the same music two times in a row!!  LOL  That's ok, I'll leave one set in the house and the other in the car.), a black sparkly beaded hand clutch purse to use for weddings or something like that - 50c, a new canvas tote - 25c, a 2 pc. rainsuit - new, $1 (will leave this in car in case we need it - it's neon orange, so we can use it as emergency signaling if we need to), a Pet nursing kit - 10c (who knows, we might need this some day for a stray animal or niece can use it in her playhouse), 2 vintage doilies - one 25c - one 50c, silver bracelet - 75c, glass square vase that I am going to put Christmas lights in 75c, a pink shirt for son - 50c (next week they are having a pink day at school . . not sure he will wear pink, but for 50c - no big deal if he won't wear it).   So, for $4.35 total I had fun!!   ;D

Did I "need" any of the above items . . . no . . . but, I will use them.  If nothing else, turn around and put them in my next sale.   ;D

WANTED:   Helper(s) to set up and help me with my garage sale this week.  Will provide lunch and vanilla frosting on saltine crackers.   ;D

Ok, I'm going to bite the bullet and get a garage sale together for this week.  It's Wednesday morning . . . . I will be working on setting this up throughout today.  None of my usual helpers are here to lend a hand, so I will be doing this solo.   :(

Depends on how much I get done today, whether I will open up tomorrow or wait until Friday.  I want to have a two day sale - either Thursday and Friday, or Friday and Saturday.  IF I have a sale tomorrow, I will have to be here by myself - which I'm not too keen on, since our house sits back from the road - I prefer to have someone else here with me.  So, I'm leaning towards Friday/Saturday.    There is a 30% possibility of rain on Sat. (none for the next two days).

I certainly hope I make more this sale than I did in my sale in June - $39.25 for the three days.   ::)  I put so much time and work into my sales that it gets so discouraging when I don't make very much.

So, please keep your fingers crossed for me, send some "good vibes" my way and if you are so inclined to come help me, all the better.   ;D  We'll have fun!!

Gotta keep moving . . . . . .

Thanks Kathyx . . . .  ;D

Well, I've got the garage swept, tables up, plastic up (I put up plastic along the walls to cover up tools, etc.), have brought the items to sell up from the basement.  Now, tomorrow, I will unpack everything and hang clothes up and arrange items on the tables (everything is already marked).  Make a run to the bank to get small bills.  Change the dates on my signs (I use these heavy-duty steel posts with my signs - I just change the days/times each sale), and put them up tomorrow afternoon.  Then Friday and Saturday will be my sale.   ;D

It's gonna be chilly out there Friday morning - we're suppose to be in the 40's.  Brrrrrrrrr  Our garage faces to the West, so we don't get the sun until the afternoon.

TJ - our 3 month old kitten couldn't figure out what I was doing out there all morning/afternoon.  He had fun chasing the broom.   ::)  Hopefully, he will stay out of the way during the sale - otherwise, I will have to put him in the cage on the porch.

Anybody is welcome to come to my sale - just follow the yellow signs.  Bring lots of money!!  ;D

Bucky

P.S. Kathyx - I played my Billboard 60's-70's music while I was setting up the sale today.  Thought of you.   ;)

You sound as if you've been so busy Mrs Bucky but I bet you are looking forward to :) Sending you lots of positive vibes.

Now about the music, the Pushbike song keeps going around ib my head. Was that on your music list by any chance?

Okie Dokie . . . I'm as ready for this sale tomorrow as I am going to be.  Everything is marked, displayed, has batteries, etc. - all they need are new homes.   ;D

Kathyx - no, the Pushbike song wasn't on any of the disks.  In fact, I don't think I've ever even heard of a song called Pushbike.

NewJoy - I don't think TJ will get underfoot tomorrow.  He usually runs when someone pulls in the driveway.  I'll keep an eye on him and cage him if I need to.   ;)

Gonna take a shower and hit the hay earlier than I normally do - I've been such a busy beaver the last few days and got NO NAPS - I'm ready for some zzzzzzzzzzzzzz's!!!   :o

If you would, please send "good vibes" my way the next two days.  I've worked so hard to get this sale ready - I just hope we have a good turnout and people who not only look . . . but buy!!   ;D

Have a good weekend everyone.

Kathyx - thanks for the good vibes - they arrived here minus the rain.   ;D

I'm very pleased with today's sale - had 21 cars in and out of the drive and made $108.  Much better than my 3-day sale in June - plus, I have another day of selling to go.

Bright and early tomorrow morning I will make a sign run (checking to make sure they are still up . . . I have had some little darlings move them before on me!   >:() and I will put fresh balloons on them to catch peoples eye as they are driving down the road.  So, if you are out and about tomorrow and see a yellow sign with yellow balloons - that's my sale . . . follow the signs!!   ;D

Keep the good vibes coming one more time.   ;)

Thank you for the good vibes sent my way today . . . . they were received with open arms.   ;D

Early this morning as I was doing my sign check - I find that a realtor had placed their sign not directly in front of mine, but close enough to partly hide my sign.   >:(  So . . . . I moved their sign!!   ;D  This is not the first time realtors have done this to me.  Granted, I know a house costs a lot more than I would make in a garage sale . . . however . . . . I was there first, and common courtesy says, don't block someone else's sign to put yours there!!

Other than that little snafu, today was a GREAT sale day!   ;D  It was a slow start, but after all was said and done, we had 25 vehicles in and out of our driveway today (maybe more than that, I lost count - I write it down on an index card as they come in).  If several come at one time, things get a little crazy.   :o

Today, "we" (hubby, son and myself) made a little over $375.  So, grand total for two days - $485.  I am very, very pleased with this.  There were two "big ticket" items - a baby chifferobe and a truck toolbox - the rest was odds and ends of things.  There were many items I just gave away free - just to get rid of them.

The new owner of the baby chifferobe is due in 30 minutes to take it to her house.  This is a new mother-to-be and her baby is due the end of November.

Garage Sale selling for 2010 is over for me.  The fall sale was much more successful than my summer one was.  I'm ready for a break - then come spring - it starts all over again.   :D

Thanks again for all the good vibes.

Sleepy101 - Good job - I'm sure the church appreciated all your donated children's clothes for their sale.  Kids outgrow their clothes so fast.  I use to find the best deals on kids clothes.

Bucky   ;D

Congradulations that all your hard work paid off.!

Glad you had GOOD signs with baloons on them.
Two things I hate with garage sales:
1) teeney little signs you can't see from the car
2) Old signs that are not taken down after the garage sale is over.
The two day ones are the worse - cause I drive by, see the sign, stop, only to see that everything was taken in because they close at xxx time.

I also need a bumper sticker thatsays "I break for garage sales!" LOL

I'm glad that our unseasonably warm fall weather here in Central IL has kept the garage sale season going this year.  Yay!

Two recent finds that I'm happy about are:  I found both of these for 50 cents each.

1)  One-Touch can opener - these sell in the store for $20.  These are cool - you just put it on top of your can and it zips around the top and pops the lid off - no sharp edges.

2)  Casino Yahtzee - board game that is no longer made.  We love this game.  We have worn the colors off our dice on our game.  This game that I bought has never been played!!   :o  I have looked and looked for another one of these games - even on Ebay - nothing.  Here, I found this one just down the street at a sale.   ;D

Anybody been to any good sales lately?

Bucky - that's some bargain. Now, a favour - we have a copy of a toddlers board book with the litle song 'Row row row your boat gently down the stream' in it, and there's a boat with some oars where you pull the tabs to make them work. If you ever see one of these at your garage sales, I'll gladly pay you for it and the postage. My little grandson was gutted when his got torn, and it's out of print now.

Ahhhh, have I ever told you friends how much I love garage sales?!?   ;D  Love, love, love them!!

The first sale I went to this morning, the lady wasn't open yet.  In fact, I didn't even see any signs that indicated there was a sale.  (In the newspaper it said the corner of Court & Miller Rd.)  I just happen to see this car pull in a drive - so, I turned around and pulled in too.  I asked the lady if she was having a sale and she said "yes".  She needed to put her sign up - which I helped her with.  I don't like going to a sale where people mob the person even before they are ready to open.  She had a cousin coming to help her, but she hadn't arrived yet.  She opened up the doors and I asked her if I could help her set things outside - which I did.  In the meantime, cars start pulling in the driveway.  People all over the place!   :o

I quickly look around and find a new tote for 50c.  There were some cute things, but nothing I "needed".  So, I go and pay.  I asked the lady if she wanted me to stay with her until her cousin arrived (since there were so many people there) - she said, "thank you, but my cousin just arrived" - she didn't want to take my money for helping her, but I insisted.

On to the next sale . . .  ;D  This garage had a TON of stuff . . . so much stuff you couldn't really see it all.  So, here's what I got:  new, still in the package, nightlight - 50c; 2 clear magnetic frames, new - 90c; new box of bandages - 25c; gourd candle, new - 10c; Marvin Gaye's Greatest Hits CD - 25c; fall silk flowers in a glass pumpkin mug - 50c; blue glass vase - 25c; The Biggest Loser Complete Calorie Counter book - 25c; The Biggest Loser Success Secrets book - 50c; The Biggest Loser Weight-Loss Program book - 50c; The Biggest Loser Cookbook - 50c. (I watch The Biggest Loser show on TV - maybe, I'll get some inspiration from these books!   ;)).    Total:  $4.50

Those are my finds for today.   ;D

I guess people either have a love or hate relation with garage sales.  Some people wouldn't be caught dead buying something "used" from someone.  I, on the other hand, think it's being resourceful to do so . . . many items are in new, or like new condition.  I have sooooo many things in my home that I paid hardly anything for, that I would never have been able to afford, if I had bought them new.  Buying them at garage sales allows me to.

Sale season is going to be winding down here directly . . . gotta enjoy it while I can.   ;)

Bucky

P.S.  I already have a graduation picture of our son & Grandpa hanging on the refrigerator in one of the new frames I got today.   ;D

Today, I had to run to town for some errands.  There just "happen" to be a sale at the local nursing home / retirement community there in town.   ;)

Of course, I had to stop in and check things out.   :D

There is this huge hall filled with round tables and all kinds of things all the way around the room.

The tables were beautiful the way they were set up.  Each table had a "theme" - all the glassware was together, all the kitchen items were together, all the picture frames were together, etc.  Plus . . . each table had a pretty table cloth on them and was professionally decorated by this gal who donated her talents.  Absolutely beautiful.  I've never seen a sale this pretty!

You almost didn't want to touch anything - it was that pretty.

Nothing was marked with prices - everything was by donation, meaning you paid them what you thought it was worth.  I'm not too keen on sales like this, but I'm sure they get more money this way since it's for a good cause.

I looked, and looked, and looked.  A lot of nice things, but nothing I needed.  I ended up getting a book that I would normally just pay 50c for at any other sale - I gave them $2.

I was very impressed with this sale.  It was VERY well put together and LOOKED amazing!
